Rangeview’s “President” Sticks to Plan, Lands Acceptance to Stanford

ch-rangeview-onyi-ozoma-17-newMany of the world's leading high-tech corporations, including Apple, Google and Facebook, call California's Silicon Valley home. Soon, the tech haven will welcome a new neighbor, Rangeview High School senior and aspiring computer scientist Onyinyechukwuka Ozoma.

The straight-A student-athlete, playfully nicknamed "President" by his classmates for being such a go-getter, recently earned acceptance to the prestigious Stanford University.

"I was so nervous," Ozoma said about opening the acceptance letter. But his jitters quickly turned to joy the moment he read "Congratulations."

“I love Stanford because it’s a school that’s elite academically, but also athletically and is very diverse,” he said.

Ozoma's dream of pursuing a career he loves at a school he lauds came true thanks to hard work, dedication and a solid plan.

"One thing I'm learning and practicing more is writing my goals down," he said. "When you put your goals where you can see them all the time, it helps you bring them to fruition."

When he entered freshman year, Ozoma wasn't sure what field he was passionate about, but knew it would be beneficial to decide before graduation.

"Working with Ann Atencio, my counselor, helped a lot. She guided me and helped me stay focused on my path," he said.

Atencio's commitment to help Ozoma develop a plan for his future is something he is thankful for. Last year, she introduced him to the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America summer institute. Ozoma was one of only 100 scholars from across the nation selected to participate in the intensive seven-week college readiness and leadership program at Princeton University.

Ozoma is also grateful for the support of many other Rangeview staff members throughout the years, including Bill Petry, Cheryl Wetzel, Justin Hoffman and Dave Gonzales, to name a few.

Rangeview Military Showcase

Written by the APS Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Department

Rangeview High School recently hosted a Military Showcase featuring members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. More than 30 students enjoyed the opportunity to engage with recruiters, ask questions about the Armed Services and discuss what skills and credentials they need to serve the country.

The event was a success thanks to the hard work and collaboration between Rangeview's Future Center Coordinator Bethlehem Gessesse and APS Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Partner Stacy Quiroz-Brown who joined forces to manage Rangeview's College and Career Center.

“This is an opportunity for students to get information about other postsecondary options," said Quiroz-Brown.  "This is the focus of the College and Career Center and PWR – to give students information and options for after secondary school.”

Hinkley Speech Team DUDL

Hinkley

Uncovering talent in students is not as easy as it may sound. Teachers, advisors, counselors and coaches are always looking for new ways to help students rise to the top, which aligns with the APS 2020 core belief that every student has unique abilities that we must recognize and engage. Based on results from a recent speech and debate tournament, a host of APS students just might have found their sweet spot.

At the tail end of 2016, students from Aurora Central. Hinkley, Gateway and Rangeview High Schools and Vista PEAK Preparatory took part in the Denver Urban Debate League's "December Double Header" at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law. Having participated in the DUDL for the past several years, APS students are no rookies when it comes to speech and debate. This time around, students did more than just participate; many took home top honors. Additionally, APS students swept several of the categories during the weekend tournament.

It’s National School Social Work Week!

thank-you-note - CopyJoin Aurora Public Schools March 6-10 as we celebrate National School Social Work Week! The annual celebration, sponsored by the School Social Work Association of America, is a time for us to pause and honor school social workers for the vital role they play in creating and maintaining positive, safe and supportive school climates.

School social workers tend to students' social and emotional needs, help parents access resources, help staff understand underlying factors affecting student performance and much more. In addressing barriers to learning, this team of dedicated staff members empower students academically and behaviorally to reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances.

The unique knowledge and skills school social workers bring to our district help build a community of trust between students, staff and families. They also exemplify the APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan core belief that student achievement and growth are driven by a highly-effective and respected staff working as a team.

If you see an APS school social worker this week (or at any time in the future), please thank him or her for their commitment to excellence.

Below are a few members of the APS school social workers team who share their passion for the profession.

Rachel Fox - CopyRachel Fox, LSW—APS School Social Worker and Mental Health Team Support
“School social workers play a vital role in our district, serving as agents for positive change through child-centered systems of support. I have worked for Aurora Public Schools for almost six years, and I continue to find my work to be rewarding and fulfilling, both personally and professionally. I am continually learning from the students, families and educators I support and this keeps me going at the end of the day!”

Deborah Mastin - CopyDeborah Mastin—Rangeview High School
“Serving as a school social worker in a high school setting has been incredibly rewarding. The thing I enjoy most is watching students grow from somewhat immature freshmen into young men and women moving on to pursue postsecondary or workforce goals. Having the privilege of working with many of the students for four years really adds to this experience. After 26 years as a social worker—first in mental health and now in education—I can still say that most days, ‘I love my job.’“

Dawn Schierling-Harder, MSW - CopyDawn Schierling-Harder, MSW—Crawford Elementary School and Fulton Academy of Excellence
“This is my 26th year as a school social worker in APS and even though I have had many tough years, I still love my job. I love my schools, the people I work with and most of all, my kids! Relationships are so important to our students and I feel connecting to kids is one of my biggest strengths. I have worked at the elementary school level most of my career, which is my absolute favorite age group. I enjoy the energy and hope students give me. So many of our students have experienced trauma most of us could never imagine and their resilience is inspiring to me--honestly, it keeps me going most days. I love their smiles, hugs and waves from across the hall or classroom. Being a school social worker has been incredibly fulfilling and I truly believe that if I had it to do over again, I would be a school social worker.”

Lisa Vratny-Smith, MSW - CopyLisa Vratny-Smith, MSW—Meadowood Child Development Center
“My children often tell me I have too much fun at my job when I recount the funny stories of the things I do with my preschool students and the funnier things they say. Having a career that allows me to play, laugh and be silly each day to support the social and emotional development of my students is a joy. While I have a lot of fun, it can also be challenging and difficult at times. The work we do to bridge the gap for students with special needs and addressing other barriers is critical in providing students with the essential tools they need as they begin their educational journey. As a school social worker, I believe supporting the social, emotional and behavioral needs of my students through working with them, their families and their teachers plants the seeds for their life-long success.”

Katia Duncan, LSW - CopyKatia Duncan, LSW—East Middle School and Rangeview High School

“I’m relatively new to school social work, having started in APS just last year, but I love what I do—there is never a dull moment! I feel really strongly that we have the unique opportunity to work with kids that may not have the opportunity to get mental health support outside of school. I see my job as primarily working with students to identify their strengths and help them have the best possible shot to make the most of themselves, despite outside factors that might be working against them. Sometimes I am their cheerleader and sometimes I have to have tough and honest conversations with the students I work with, but, most of all, I just make sure they know that I believe in them and their capacity to do great things with the hope that they can start to believe it too.”

Prestigious Scholarships Rolling in for APS’ Class of 2017

CH-Hinkley-Abena-Antobre-11-EDITED - CopyAs the school year begins to wind down to an end and thoughts of leaving high school swirl through seniors’ minds, the students may experience feelings that are bitter sweet. But there’s one thing senior year can bring that’s just sweet—a scholarship. And there’s one thing that can put the cherry on top—a full ride.

One APS student is enjoying the best of both worlds, two-fold. Meet Hinkey High School senior Abena Antobre (pictured right). After persevering through highly-competitive, rigorous application and interview processes, she earned both the Boettcher and Daniels Fund scholarships! The prestigious programs award full-ride scholarships and support to students who exhibit academic excellence, humanitarianism and leadership.

“It was pretty cool because I got both letters on the same day!” said Antbore. “I cried a little bit and I don’t usually cry, but it’s something I’ve been working toward since I was a freshman.”

Antobre will soon begin working toward her next goal, which is to become a hematologist that specializes in sickle cell anemia. Down the road, she aspires to improve the healthcare system in her homeland of Ghana.

“I don’t know who I’m going to help exactly, but if I work really hard, I can impact a lot of peoples' lives.”

If Antobre accepts the title of a Daniels Scholar, she will be amongst 10 other APS students! APS is home to nearly a dozen 2017 Daniels Scholars, five from Rangeview alone.  We are extremely proud of each scholar listed below and wish them continued success.

“Our four children attended school at Yale, Columbia and Rangeview. Each received an excellent education that was personalized and unique. We are fortunate to have worked with the teachers of our children and the most wonderful colleagues. Through APS, we have formed lasting friendships and have been inspired by kind, dedicated and courageous leaders. We can only hope that we were as influential in our own students’ lives. It’s been very rewarding.”

Former Mrachek Student Becomes Published Author, Unknowingly!

Surprise! You are a published author and you are about to read your book to a classroom full of excited students before handing out signed copies.

This is what former Mrachek Middle School student Kai Aptidon experienced near the end of the 2016-17 school year. She had no idea that the short children’s story she wrote during her senior year at Rangeview High School would come to life that day in such a special way.

Her intent behind the story, titled Nigel’s Imagination Saves the Day, was to simply express her growing love for children, something she would read for her own enjoyment.

But her mother, Mrachek technology assistant Donna Aptidon, knew the story could have a bigger impact on youth. While Kai studies English and Creative Writing at the University of Colorado Boulder, Donna took it upon herself to self-publish the book.

“I wanted to do something that would continue to encourage Kai on her journey towards becoming a teacher,” she said.

To make it more captivating, Donna appointed Sydnee Masias, Mrachek dean's daughter, to provide colorful illustrations.

Check out preview pages of the book HERE!  The story introduces a child named Nigel who has such a big imagination that he is often teased.  So he decides to watch television instead. One day, an astronaut appears out of the screen and takes Nigel on an adventure that's dependent on his imagination.

Aurora Public Schools is proud to see our core belief that every student has unique abilities we must recognize and engage demonstrated in such an amazing way.  We wish Kai the best in her pursuit to work with children!
